Shortages of all opioids continue with some dosage formulations unavailable or on allocation.1-4 Generic medications are frequently manufactured overseas and active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) often come from China; depending on tariff status drug costs will likely increase, and supply issues may worsen.2 All immediate-release, non-abuse deterrent opioid formulations can be administered rectally. If injectable or oral concentrated formulations are unavailable, and rectal administration is required, a medication administration device (Macy Catheter) may increase comfort for patients and family caregivers.5,6 Please review alternatives below if an opioid formulation becomes unavailable in your area.
